Went to the Royal Academy today to see the Degas exhibition. Had to queue to get a ticket for about 15m.

I thought the lighting was inadequate in the exhibition. I understand it was suppose to somehow re create the mood and add to the atmosphere of the show but I found it annoying. I couldn't see the paintings properly. What I really liked, almost even more than Degas paintings and sculptures themselves, was the way the show was curated: all the attention to detail in making sure context was put around the time at which Degas was working and how his work was influenced by technological advances of his time and how the practice of other artists influenced his work. The above video is an example of this.

The Consciousness Field at the Breaking Convention

Breaking Convention - This was the 1st time I showed the Consciousness Field outside a gallery environment and on such a scaled down version. It gave me an idea of how it will work in New York next month and it was a massive learning curve.

Setting up the installation is quite labour intensive and it took the whole of the 1st evening to do it. Thanks to all the help from the conference's volunteers this was a lot less laborious. Everyone was helpful. I did manage to get away to pick up a programme at some point and as soon as I skimmed through it I wondered 'how on Earth am I gona be in two places at the same time?!'

Well, shame on me (!), I opted for letting the installation grow on its own and attended all the talks I wanted and watched the films I was interested in. I was supposed to be glued to the installation the whole time, this was the plan, but then once again I did exactly the opposite! It does make me wonder about free will..

By far my favourite talk was by Robin Carhart-Harris on the effects of psilocybin on brain function. For those who know me this will be no surprise as my interest on brain functioning in well documented!!

All together I collected 67 definitions over the 2/3 days. And the same pattern emerged. I think it will get a lot more interesting once I take it out of the UK, Europa and English speaking countries..

This was a trip long planned but dateless, until a certain day in August when I took the executive decision to visit my friend Zoli. Finally I booked that flight. After 7 years, after thinking about it for countess hours over the years..

He was in Istanbul..

Have to say it wasn't high on my list of places to go..

Such an unassuming city from the outside. But when one enters these huge grey walls you are greeted by the most dazzling patterns drawn granscale shamelessly showcasing their great ability to embellish in a simple wicked surprisingly psychedelic way. And the cats!! Everywhere, sweetest like no others..there's alot to be said about that..

This was at some point the centre of the Roman Empire East. Joining Europe and Asia..it's easy to imagine the kind of life the Sultan enjoyed when visiting Topkapi Palace, I had never seen until then, such amazing jewels..bling taken to a whole new level!! 86c diamond, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc makes the Queen of England look like a pauper!!!!!!! This palace is twice the size of the Vatican. Half the size of Monaco...sprawling views of the Bosphoros, gardens, fountains... oh so beautiful that all I could think of was I want a party here and in my head started to put the perfect line-up together, shivering at the thought of 100k Opus sound system bouncing off the domes, broadcast through the speakers from the mosque.. I was really running with it!!

On another note, found a new painting for The Brain Unravelled..

And Cyprus...hilarious. Made the front page of the local paper walking out of the airport in the middle of a taxi strike..all I could think of was the sea! I wanted a swim after five days of rain in Istanbul..the Mediterranean? Yes please!

Chats and walks and swimming, letting the universe carry you...floating and letting the immense sea support you, and feel as part of a much greater thing..

'Anthropology of the Mind – the rise of a new Homo'

Anthropology is the study of Humankind and Cultures and Anthropology of the Mind is a new field of research in Anthropology which dedicates itself to the study of consciousness. It subscribes to Universalism: all peoples are fully and equally human. For me consciousness is the capacity that allows me to connect with myself, others and the universe. For Prof Chris Knight it is awareness. Human consciousness is distinctively social. Buddhists will tell you it has eight stages and it is a sort of record of everything. But the truth is that no one knows for certain. Despite the fact that every day thousands of scientists and monks alike all over the world work towards either understanding it or attaining it. Consciousness is one of Humankind’s holy grails still.

Certainly in our circles consciousness has become a buzz word. Shift of consciousness this, awareness that, conscious partying, and the list goes on. Since the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle who studied the relationship between mind and soul, humans have wondered about consciousness. Consciousness is the ultimate lotus flower for the spiritual being. In consciousness we have deposited all our hope of redemption and salvation. And we don’t even know what it is or how it works! Isn’t it ironic?

But let’s return to anthropology for a moment. How has this science that claims to study Man, not have looked at consciousness before? The study of consciousness per se within anthropology sprung up in the second half of the twentieth century. One could say anthropology has looked into the evolution of consciousness before, but from the vantage point of human evolution. A good example of this is the work of Richard Leaky in ‘The origin of Humankind’ where he dedicates a whole chapter to the origin of the mind and says ‘the origin of human consciousness, some time within the last 2.5 million years, was the third event’ that ‘marks the history of life on earth’. I would argue the study of shamanism and native mythology in particular can also be considered an early study of consciousness in anthropology. ‘The Raw & the Cooked’ by Lévi-Strauss is the perfect example of such an attempt.

However, Anthropology of the Mind was purposely created in order to look at consciousness in a completely different manner from which anthropology has conducted its research and engaged with the public so far. Traditionally an anthropologist goes to the ‘field’ (or chosen culture), lives there for a couple of years and then comes back and writes a mammoth piece about it. Only a few hundred people will ever read it if (s)he’s lucky largely because only academics or really curious people will ever go to the trouble of reading such accounts. Anthropology of the Mind however, collects its data through specially devised installations located in places such as art exhibitions and festivals. The idea behind this is to create the field as opposed to going to it. Like this the data is collected and transmitted simultaneously. One leaves their own definition of consciousness on the wall and can immediately see others definitions. At the end all the data is collated and the word pattern that emerges is analysed and compared with previously discovered patterns. In time a map of all the data is created making it possible to examine the overall word pattern evolution through time and space. The first of such installations was placed at The Brain Unravelled exhibition in London in September 2009. Expect to see it at some of the UK festivals this coming summer.

For much anthropology is still an intellectual project. Meaning, it’s great to exercise your grey matter but when it comes to real engagement with the public it’s outside its remit. Anthropologists are mere observers. Anthropology of the Mind represents a new phase in Anthropology. It’s rather like a metaphor for the stage which human consciousness evolution is at. The new Homo sapiens are the ones who are in touch with nature and apply centuries of knowledge accumulation to create a sustainable future. There is only one way this world will change: through action. And action is geared by thoughts.

It still amazes me how there are deer in the middle of a London park with people and cars running through the middle. There's something rather surreal about it. At the same time a fine example of British passion for conservation and defiance.. less impressive but still worthy of praise are the squirrels! These also run around and dot the scenery. People say they are like city rats along with pigeons, but I think they're great. I hadn't seen a fox, a squirrel or a deer in the wild until I came to London. And London is hardly 'the wild'!!! Here's another one to add to my list of reasons why I Love London..

First Anthropology A-Level Launched in Britain

This is great news for Anthropology. I myself didn't even know Anthropology existed when I was doing my A-Levels in Portugal, it was what I always wanted to study but just didn't know there was a science that studied Humankind and Cultures at the time. I soon found out when I arrived in London to do my BA. I got there in the end and I finished my MSc in Social Anthropology in 2008 at UCL. A PhD will come next..

The A-Level starts in September 2010 and I think in the coming years we will see a considerable increase in the intake of students at universities for Anthropology as a consequence. You can read all about it here.

Here are some photos I've been meaning to publish for quite some time but been so busy I didn't get around to. Anish Kapoor put a concave and convex mirror on the top of the hill in Patcham near Brighton. 'Curve'. You could see yourself and others upside down, depending on the angle you stood on. I have tons more but here's a few.. I also did a video, and that is wicked...I first saw his work at the Tate Modern many years ago.

I first saw these at Liberty's for a staggering £160!!!

The moment I saw them I immediattly decided I was going to do my own. London is the perfect place to treasure hunt for old crockery shouting out to be recycled from charity shops.

These are the first two. Still have to work on getting them bang in the middle and the best glue to use. For these I used superglue but am not sure if it is the best solution.. am going to try with 'UhU' next.. I'm sure the more I make the better they will be!

I love some of Gilbert & George's work - the new show at the White Cube is quite big, in fact it is so big it's divided into two sites, Mason's Yard and Hoxton.

Of course, one is not supposed to take photos so this is a sneaky one at Hoxton! Not one of the best works. My favorites are 'Ban Religion' and 'Knees Up'.

Went on to Pure Evil after,

to see Gustavo Ortiz's exhibition 'Metamorphosis' - really enjoyed this. The pieces are a mixed media of painting with collage. This series in particular is based on the Argentinian 'myth of origin' according to which in the begginning there were only people and then people transformed into everything: trees, the sea, the sky, etc.. I love trees so I had to pick this one.

It all turned into a bit of a jollie after a few drinks.........

and when we finally made it to the pub, I saw this form of pool I hadn't come across before!

This was the last photo I took that night after a considerable amount of booze had been consumed!!

It had been a long time since I'd been to a poetry night..

The one below was picked by the girl who organised the night - she scattered them along the room for people to take away, this is only an excerpt, the whole thing was 7 and a quarter pages long!!

It was so inspiring the next day I woke up and wrote some poems myself! Here's a couple:

Why complicate things with sex,

when you can imagine it all,

from the comfort of your bed,

all nice and perfect,

with the right amount of dirty bits,

tailored by your imagination,

to satisfy your most intimate desires?

Why complicate things with sex,

when you can ride the wave of expectation,

of those first encounters,

when all is discovery and excitement,

where all is perfect,

all happy endings still possible,

and all outcomes a possibility?

But then the flesh craves touch,

and you want to smell

that scent that drives you mad.

Tongues play and you want to grab.

Your hands travel gently,

mapping your lovers landscape.

He pulls you closer

and tastes you over.

Your body tenses,

and lost are all your past tenses..

Dawn arrived once again

confirming the witnessing of yet another day.

Long gone are the days,

when I contemplated death

When I first heard it on the radio I dismissed it as a prank. I thought: 'surely that can't be right, it must be a joke Orson Wells style'. This was mid afternoon; as I spent the rest of the day shopping and then popped to a mate's house for a bit of socialising, it wasn't until I was about to go to bed at around 2am when my flatmate mentioned it and we had a quick chat about it. Of course, I was still in disbelief and said to him: 'it must be a marketing ploy'. I thought to myself: 'he staged his own death to collect the insurance money'. A bit cynical I know! When I woke up this morning and logged onto the internet to check my emails there it was on my home page news: 'Michael Jackson has died'. Gulp! It is true after all!

Hardly surprising even if sudden...but then death usually is.

This is a man who physically altered himself by changing the colour of his skin and his physical appearance through plastic surgery. I can't even imagine what went through his mind as he executed such transformation, let alone the amount of medication he took to cope with all the changes and injuries incurred along the way! Only those closest to him will really know the truth about his everyday existence. I'm not sure anyone really knows what he really believed...perhaps not even himself after a while. From the outside it looks as he was a very traumatised and confused soul.

He was one of the few, if not the only singer to raise to stardom at such young age and stay in the limelight for such a long time. He was adored and then loathed after his child molestation allegations. To grow up in such an environment, with such an abundance and incredible talent must have been a challenging situation. As a human being, I can't even start to imagine what it would have been like to go through life with a magnifying glass up and close all the time.. some of the questions I ask myself about him are: why did he change the colour of his skin? was he target of racial discrimination that led to it? why did he change his physical appearance so much? Was he addicted to plastic surgery? Was he a paedophile? Was he a virgin?

Regardless of all these questions and what people might say, to me he will always be a GREAT singer and dancer. He leaves a legacy that goes beyond his public persona. He certainly left his mark in the world and made it into the history books...

Pom-Poms 4 Neurons

As I am caught making Pom-Poms everywhere I go these days, the most common thing I hear is 'how do you do them again? I haven't done one since I was about 6 or something!' so here are the instructions.

- one colour per Pom-Pom,

- strong colours only (no pastel colours, etc),

- Pom-Poms should be no bigger than 10cm and no smaller than 5cm in diameter, and

- please leave a hanging thread of 2m (the room has a very high ceiling!)'

I came across the story of this guy called Nick who is doing the coast of Britain by bike to raise money for Parkinson's Disease Society. He started on Summer Solstice (21st June) and is aiming to do 50 miles a day. He promises to blog every day with updates. His blog is worth exploring as is full of interesting stuff. As I was walking along I found this white bike chained to a lamp post. I was told these are in places where a cyclist died..sad but a nice tribute. Ever since I saw this one I started noticing them in various other locations. Not really an incentive to cycle on the roads of London are they?..I prefer the pavement myself, the buses are just too big and scary!
